50% of jobs are being found through networking - not online. This is according to 2019 Job Seeker Nation Survey. Since COVID happened I must beg to differ.
We are in the midst of a global pandemic and all a sudden we have moved our lives online. It doesn't look like we will be going back to 'normal' anytime soon. This means we are going to have to do our career xploration journey online for the foreseeable future. It is pretty cool actually. The are endless opportunities online. You just have to connect with people and build a network.
Yet I thought I'd list 5 tips on what you should think about when networking online. It might sound a bit daunting - but once you get the hang of it you'll be fine. You'll realize that there is a lot of stuff you are able to do now that wouldn't have been an option before the pandemic.
Set A Goal
Before you start dedicating time to your networking.. Make sure to have a think about where your networking should take you. Do you want to find a job? Explore a new field? Learn from real professionals? Have interesting conversations? Share your own content and grow a following? Market a product? Or maybe even generate sales?
The opportunities are endless but so are the pathways to get there. So make sure you define a goal that's short and sweet. It will help you to focus!
Make Your LinkedIn Profile Shine
You want your LinkedIn profile (or other platforms if those are more relevant to your goal) to shine. Put in an hour or two to make it look good and adapt it to your goal. What do you want people to do when they look at your profile? Where do you want them to go? What information do you want to give them?
A good idea can be to watch some YouTube videos on how to maximize your platform to get where you want. Or read the LinkedIn blog - they provide a bunch of free tips on how you can make the most of their platform.
Have A Voice
Talk about your career journey. Talk about your field, what roles you are looking for, dream projects you are looking to do. Have a voice! If people don't know what you are after, then how are they going to be able to help you?
Be you, but don't be selfish. Make sure you engage in other people's content. Share interesting thoughts and feedback.
If you are on LinkedIn - share status updates, write an article, watch lives, like and comment. This will help you build your personal brand and connect with likeminded people.
